How it works

The volumetric weight formula

Couriers charge for the space a parcel occupies as well as its weight. The volumetric weight of a box is:

Length × Breadth × Height (cm) ÷ 5000 = volumetric weight (kg)

The courier then compares this with the actual weight on the scale and bills the higher of the two — the chargeable weight.

Example

A box measuring 40 × 30 × 20 cm weighing 2 kg has a volumetric weight of 40 × 30 × 20 ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg. Because 4.8 kg is more than 2 kg, you are billed for 4.8 kg (usually rounded up to the next 0.5 kg slab).

Tips to lower your shipping cost

  • Choose the smallest box that protects the item.
  • Measure the outer dimensions at the widest points, including bulges.
  • Use poly mailers for soft, non-fragile items like clothing.
  • Compare partners — divisors and slabs differ between couriers. Check live B2C rates or international rates.

FAQ

Volumetric weight — FAQs

Quick answers about shipping with ENVOI.

01What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric (or dimensional) weight reflects how much space a parcel takes up in a vehicle or aircraft. It is calculated from the length, breadth and height of the package rather than what it weighs on a scale.

02How do I calculate volumetric weight?

Multiply length × breadth × height in centimetres and divide by the courier’s divisor — usually 5000. For example, a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box is 24,000 ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg volumetric weight.

03What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable (billable) weight is the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. Couriers price your shipment on this number, so a light but bulky box can cost more than you expect.

04Why do some couriers use 4000 instead of 5000?

The divisor depends on the courier and service. 5000 is the most common for domestic and international express; some partners and air services use 4000, which results in a higher volumetric weight.

05How can I reduce volumetric weight?

Use the smallest box that safely fits your item, avoid excess void fill, and measure accurately. Even a few centimetres off each side can noticeably lower the chargeable weight.
